Size does matter: relationships between image pixel size and landscape process scales
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper briefly reviews the application of digital elevation models (DEMs) to the study of landscapes. Such studies can involve both the enhancement of DEM images to highlight particular patterns, and the use of DEMs to model attribute values of landscapes. Recognition of palaesurfaces is an example of the first use, while modelling hydrological properties based on slope attributes derived from a DEM is another.

Quantifying spatial heterogeneity at the landscape scale using variogram models
The monitoring of earth surface dynamic processes at a global scale requires high temporal frequency remote sensing observations which are provided up to now by moderate spatial resolution sensors. However, the spatial heterogeneity within the moderate spatial resolution pixel biases non-linear estimation processes of land surface variables from remote sensing data. To limit its influence on th...
متن کاملHow Small Should Pixel Size Be?
Pixel design is a key part of image sensor design. After deciding on pixel architecture, a fundamental tradeoff is made to select pixel size. A small pixel size is desirable because it results in a smaller die size and/or higher spatial resolution; a large pixel size is desirable because it results in higher dynamic range and signal-to-noise ratio. Given these two ways to improve image quality ...
متن کاملDefining the Spatial Resolution Requirements for Crop Identification Using Optical Remote Sensing
The past decades have seen an increasing demand for operational monitoring of crop conditions and food production at local to global scales. To properly use satellite Earth observation for such agricultural monitoring, high temporal revisit frequency over vast geographic areas is necessary. However, this often limits the spatial resolution that can be used. The challenge of discriminating pixel...
متن کاملA Biologically Inspired Approach for Fast Image Processing
As features within an image may be present at many scales, application of feature detectors at multiple scales can improve accuracy of the detected localisation and orientation. As the scale and size of a feature detector increases, so does the computational complexity of implementation across the image domain. To address this issue we present a novel integral image for hexagonal pixel based im...
متن کاملMultiscale Landscape Representation Derived from Remote Sensing Images Using Spatial Subpixel Models and Combinatorial Maps
Landscapes can be modelled as sets of homogeneous objects (landscape elements) forming areas of characteristic patterns (landscape units). The common way to represent landscapes is by vector GIS data structures which do not provide a mechanism for storing the spatial relationships between the objects in explicit form. Also, they do not account for a multi-scale representation. Graphs can be use...
